The Painkillers Kill More than Pain awareness campaign was an initiative started by Julie and Avi Isreal’s organization, Save the Michaels of the World, following the untimely death of their son Michael.
The initial campaign was developed through a community-wide collaboration effort, spearheaded through Avi and Julie’s advocacy work with BlueCross BlueShield of Western New York and Horizon Health Services. The collaboration of these organizations resulted in the following:
- providing our community with education about the dangers of opioids,
- raising awareness about the dangers of prescription pills and heroin,
- helping to prevent suicide and overdose, and
- providing people in our community with resources to get help.
In early 2017, we decided to continue our mission of helping families and individuals find education and resources easily in Western New York, but decided to strengthen our mission by refocusing on a message of hope. Thus, we decided to rename our campaign, Hope on the Horizon.
Even though we find ourselves in the midst of an opioid epidemic, and hear one tragic story after another, we want you to know that there is HOPE and we can help you and your family.
Horizon is committed to continuing the work of the Painkillers Kill campaign. Through education and providing easy access to care, we hope to decrease the amount of untimely deaths in our community.
Where there is pain, there is also HOPE. To connect to resources and help in our Western New York area, please call (716) 831-1800.
